Over 3 billion people rely on open fires to cook for their families, unintentionally polluting their homes and the environment. This household air pollution kills an estimated 4.3 million people per year, mostly women and children.
In response to these shocking statistics, we at Mainstream decided to do something about it. A typical biomass cook stove burns sticks and logs more efficiently than a open fire. However, standard cook stoves do very little to address the in-house pollution that occurs every day. In addition to the pollution, trees are being used for fuel at a rate that severely affects the location ecosystem. In many developing nations, women spend large portions of their day gathering firewood so that they can cook for their families.

Fast Cat™ Cook Stove

With the Mainstream StoveLabs™ Fast Cat™, we have addressed both issues: We have optimized the burning of biomass and reduced CO emissions. The design funnels the heat directly to the cooking surface.
Our design incorporates a catalytic converter which converts toxic Carbon Monoxide released from the fire into Carbon Dioxide, making the Fast Cat™ a much safer indoor option for developing world kitchens.
