Mainstream Engineering Awarded Contract from the Army Research Laboratory for Fuel Sulfur Sensor

ROCKLEDGE, FL – April 24th, 2013 – Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 27-year-old Brevard County research and manufacturing company, has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory for the development of a compact, in-line sensor for the accurate measurement of the amount of sulfur in jet fuel. Fuel cells are destroyed by sulfur in the fuel. Mainstream is developing a compact, rugged, in-line sensor for measuring total sulfur in JP-8 as it enters the desulfurized upstream of the fuel cell. This sensor will allow better management of the desulfurization process and minimize maintenance requirements.

The Army is seeking a new power source for remotely located ground sensor systems. These sensor systems are currently powered by a bank of six BA-5590 primary batteries connected in parallel. Mainstream recently completed a highly successful R&D effort that evaluated the replacement of the current battery-based power source with a fuel cell-based power source. This liquid-fueled fuel cell will double the mission duration while being smaller and lighter.

This new Army contract will allow Mainstream to create additional engineering and production positions. “We are excited about this new fuel cell technology, the potential energy storage benefits for civilian and military applications, and the fact that it represents another Made in the USA product,” stated Dr. Robert Scaringe, President of Mainstream.
