Mainstream Engineering Awarded Contract from NASA to develop a Toxicity Mitigating Single-Fluid Cooling System for Manned Spacecraft

Mainstream Engineering Awarded Contract from NASA to develop a Toxicity Mitigating Single-Fluid Cooling System for Manned Spacecraft

ROCKLEDGE, FL — December 9, 2018 — Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 32-year-old Brevard County manufacturer with a history of leading-edge research and development that has resulted in advanced, lean-manufacturing, cost-competitive products, which are all Made in the USA, has been awarded a contract from NASA for a Toxicity Mitigating Single-Fluid Cooling System for Manned Spacecraft.

The thermal control systems for manned spacecraft are typically two-loop designs where a low freezing point toxic liquid is used, exterior to the manned vessel, to reject heat through the radiator array. A single-phase thermal loop inside the manned vessel that uses a non-toxic liquid is used for payload cooling and space conditioning. This architecture is necessary for crew safety because very low freezing point fluids are somewhat toxic or untested but comes with a mass penalty due to the need for extra components and two loops instead of a single loop. Mainstream has developed a single loop architecture that uses toxicity mitigating technology.

ROCKLEDGE, FL — November 23, 2018 — Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 32-year-old Brevard County manufacturer with a history of leading-edge research and development that has resulted in advanced, lean-manufacturing, cost-competitive products, which are all Made in the USA, has been awarded a contract from the Air Force to develop an Advanced Sealing System for Rotary Engines.

Mainstream will develop advanced sealing technologies for heavy fuel engines used on Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). The Air Force, Navy, and Army operate RPA’s that are powered with small engines. It is currently a DoD directive to transition to a single battlespace fuel, which would inherently be a diesel-like fuel such as JP-8. Incorporating advanced sealing concepts into RPAs has the potential to increase engine efficiencies, reliability, durability, and to achieve current DoD objectives.

Mainstream Engineering Awarded Contract from the US Army for an Advanced Compact Power Supply

ROCKLEDGE, FL — November 11, 2018 — Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 33-year-old Brevard County manufacturer with a history of leading-edge research and development that has resulted in advanced, lean-manufacturing, cost-competitive products, which are all Made in the USA, has been awarded a contract from the U.S Army for an advanced electrical power supply.

Current army vehicles use Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTs) power inverters to power 120VAC loads. These inverters are large and inefficient. They are also not well suited to the very hot desert climates of the Middle East. As a result, the COTS power inverters currently used do not meet many of the typical requirements for military grade electronics resulting in high failure rates.
In this program, an integrated design considering the electrical, thermal, mechanical, and functional aspects of a 2.5kW inverter have been combined to produce a revolutionary new inverter configuration that is smaller, lighter, more rugged and more efficient.

ROCKLEDGE, FL — October 19, 2018 —  Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 32-year-old Brevard County manufacturer with a history of leading-edge research and development, has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Air Force to demonstrate a Portable Fuel Purification System.

Thousands of pounds of fuel are recovered from aircraft during maintenance and this fuel is often then used in support equipment. Recovered fuel that is contaminated (water, sediment, hydraulic and/or engine oil) may adversely affect equipment life resulting in unnecessary maintenance costs.   Mainstream is demonstrating a high volume, low cost, portable fuel purifier suitable for flight line and depot fuel recovery and reprocessing operations.

Mainstream Engineering Awarded Grant from the Department of Energy to Design a Flexible, Load-following Geothermal Power Plant

Mainstream Engineering Awarded Grant from the Department of Energy to Design a Flexible, Load-following Geothermal Power Plant

ROCKLEDGE, FL —September 21, 2018— Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 32-year-old Brevard County research and manufacturing company, has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop an efficient geothermal power plant that can adjust its power output to match demand.

Heat energy from the earth represents a nearly inexhaustible and underutilized domestic energy resource. This project is developing technology that will allow geothermal power plants to operate flexibly, enabling them to seamlessly adjust their electrical power output in response to requests from the electric utility.

Enabling flexible geothermal power is important because other renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, are not flexible. The need is especially acute in places like California that have a large fraction of renewable power. California has a goal of achieving 40% renewable power by 2022, and also has thousands of megawatts of unused available geothermal power.

Designing a flexible geothermal plant is challenging because geothermal wells respond slowly and can be intolerant of process fluctuations. As part of this development project, Mainstream’s engineers, along with engineers from Cornell University, are developing a thermal energy storage unit that will buffer against these fluctuations and sidestep some design challenges related to peak power production and fast transient response. By catalyzing the adoption of flexible geothermal power, this technology would allow for better geothermal resource utilization.

Mainstream Engineering Awarded Contract from the Navy to Develop Lightweight Power Factor Correction (PFC) Hardware for Navy Aircraft

ROCKLEDGE, FL — August 31, 2018 — Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 32-year-old Brevard County manufacturer with a history of leading-edge research and development has been awarded a contract from the Navy to produce lightweight Power Factor Correction (PFC) hardware that will correct for out-of-spec generator power factor.  The capacitance inherent in aircraft avionics causes the aircraft electric power factor to deviate from the specification rating range resulting in reliability and life issues.  Mainstream has been tasked with creating a system that is in parallel to the existing aircraft electrical power system, while also being able to withstand the environment experienced by a military combat aircraft. Mainstream will also demonstrate that the PFC hardware can be easily integrated into existing aircraft.

ROCKLEDGE, FL — August 24, 2018 — Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a 32-year-old Brevard County manufacturer with a history of leading-edge research and development, has been awarded a contract from the Navy to develop advanced actuators for Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs). Under this effort, Mainstream will be demonstrating unique electroactive polymer (EAP)-based actuators. Unlike conventional surface ships, UUVs are expected to survive and operate in extreme ocean environmental conditions and therefore the control surfaces and actuators must be capable of sustaining high levels of force and acceleration while also being extremely compact and lightweight. Mainstream is also exploring the use of this technology for artificial muscle actuators to be used in future robots.
