Product Design and Development Manager
Job Description
As a Product Design & Development Manager you will be responsible for bringing new products to market by providing necessary technical and design leadership as well as direction and guidance for product development teams. This position will interface with commercial customers, government customers, engineering and marketing to develop a product business case and specification. You will lead a cross-functional team comprised of members from manufacturing, engineering, marketing, strategic alliances, quality, and various consultants and vendors through Mainstream's product development process. Responsibilities include oversight for mechanical, electromechanical, and chemical product development for products including but not limited to military air conditioning and refrigeration systems, aftermarket HVAC/R parts and products, and embedded monitoring and diagnostics devices.
Job Functions
The essential function of this position is to provide a higher level of technical and managerial expertise in the area of product development to ensure successful product rollout and market acceptance. This manager will improve the rate and speed at which products with complex mechanical components and systems can be developed by scoping, defining deliverables, creating product testing and validation plans, and working with vendors and internal teams to drive the product development process. This manager will help to mitigate risks to product realization by defining barriers to success including timing, cost, and feasibility of technical deliverables. The successful candidate will contribute not only to the management of the design and development process, but will also champion the technical tasks required to bring top quality products to market.
Specific Duties and Competencies:
- Responsible for managing multiple complex projects with minimal direction, including providing necessary technical and engineering direction to ensure successful product rollout and market acceptance.
- Lead product design efforts and create product specifications based on contractual requirements, market studies, consumer input, feasibility studies, and various other inputs.
- Responsible for developing appropriate prototypes and test plans to prove concepts.
- Direct assigned engineering activities of the project teams in order to achieve successful market introduction according to Mainstream's product development process.
- Interface with manufacturing, vendors, and sourcing teams to communicate product-level needs and wishes.
- Responsible for communicating technical details, ideas, and concepts to engineers and non-engineers.
- Provide direction to manufacturing and suppliers to ensure specifications, cost targets, desired results and timelines are met.
Job Requirements
- BSME from an accredited college of engineering, advanced technical degree a plus and/or 10+ years of new product development experience in refrigeration and/or appliances.
- Strong background in product development.
- Experience with electromechanical devices (circuits, wiring, controls, etc).
- Experience writing both business and technical requirement documents.
- Must possess both outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills.
- Experience with all aspects of a product lifecycle.
- Ability to manage multiple programs concurrently; organized, with good time management skills.
